Words can’t even express how upsetting this is as a car guy and enthusiast.
As if drifting in time square isn’t bad enough.... then hitting and running from a cop. Sigh.
If the car isn’t stolen or he already had warrants out, he pretty much turned a traffic ticket into a nice long prison sentence quite quickly.
What do you guys think?

He’s a fucking asshole and I hope that his car gets keyed and pissed on.
There’s a reason why those burnouts should only be made in a track.
the original Jalopnik article has a lot of comments saying that he shouldn’t have drawned his gun, I think it was perfectly reasonable after being hit by the car.

I agree on the gun thing. Had he caught up with the guy there is no doubt the guy would have probably taken more aggressive measures and if he had a gun shot at the officer. Now when he lost sight of the car having the gun out, different story I guess— but I have to assume the safety was on.

The way Oppo buries things not in the last few hours, I always think it’s ok to post, especially something newsworthy like this.

I’ve tested the glock 17s they normally run around with and I think they have an automatic safety ( You need to press two triggers at once or something along those lines) so its okay... plus maybe he didn’t have his finger on the trigger? Basic gun handling teaches you not to have your finger on the trigger unless you’re certain you’re gonna shoot.

I’m disappointed in both parties here. The Merc driver is a huge embarrassment to the car community and shouldn’t have done the burnout in the first place. Despite the Merc driver’s actions, I don’t feel that drawing a firearm in a crowded area was the right decision, especially with the car fleeing the area at high speed. Also, please stop calling a sad peg-leg burnout “drifting”.

Looks like a Glock to me. No traditional safety, however it has the 12lb NYPD trigger. If his finger was off it then it’s honestly not *that* big a deal.
Regarding this:
the original Jalopnik article has a lot of comments saying that he shouldn’t have drawned his gun, I think it was perfectly reasonable after being hit by the car.
Those people are fucking stupid. Here’s what I posted on the FP.
Given that:
1.) Times Square is very populated
2.) NYC is always on edge about terrorist attacks
3.) Vehicle based terrorist attacks are becoming more common (NYC is adding 1500 bollards to combat the issue this year )
4.) The cop can’t assume “it’s just a shithead”.
The weapon wasn’t drawn until the officer is already being pushed- his first attempt to stop the driver was with words and directions.

Well, let me put it this way... had this happen in a populated street in Mexico everyone would’ve started hitting the guy (gall), had he ran over a police officer in a similar situation every single cop present would’ve shot the car.
I don’t like how its handled here, police officers tend to be quite brutish here. I think that the officer did nothing wrong in this case. Specially because its a populated area, what if the scumbag actually ran over someone else or he (she) himself had a gun?
If New York city was in a country with limited access to handguns and/or cops without pistols I’d agree with you but in this case... man you sometimes need to fight fire with fire

A car plowed into a crowd last May in Times Square.
A bomb went off there last month.
He drew only after verbal instructions were ignored. We know NOW that the driver was just being a shithead. In the moment only the car occupants really know.

not sure if he was drifting before the burnout. Regardless, seems there was justification to draw the weapon (I.e. if Car headed toward a crowd shooting the driver would be prudent). Or if the guy had crashed and jumped out guns blazing, that second to draw could mean life and death. As a former lawyer who worked in the DAs office, seems there’s justification for officer safety. It’s a little more gray to keep it out if he lost sight of the car which may have happened- but had he turned the corner and there was the guy heading back towards him, etc.
Not being there, I won’t rush to judge nor should we.

Maybe it’s because I’m Canadian, but if I were in the cop’s position I would have reached for my radio. There are plenty of cops in NYC, I’m sure there would have been one with a better vantage point if firing rounds was necessary.

See my reply to Crowmolly. Just because the cop *could* have lined up a shot if necessary, another cop probably could have lined up a better shot. Sometimes a radio is the more advantageous tool at the time.

See my replies to Crowmolly and The Aspiring Engineer. Even though drawing the weapon was justifiable, I still feel that grabbing a radio may very well have been a better option.

I think in the end discussing this is hopeless. the cop did what he thought was the best choice, and other cops were radioing along him.
“Maybe it’s because I’m Canadian”
Yeah, its exactly because of that, and to be honest, I’d love to see the US having reasonable gun control laws. That would solve a lot of issues for us because a lot of the guns used by cartels and organized crime here in Mexico are illegaly brought over the American border.
I’d love to be able to be on your side of the argument, but shamefully some places are so abruptly crazy that you need to be crazy yourself.
In short: I wish the cop was able to just run after the guy without intrinsically feeling compelled to pull out his gun. As a documentary about policing in Manchester vs the US said
“Cops are more relaxed because they police in another world!”

Training and being immersed in the middle of an event with immediate threat will probably say otherwise.

I see what you’re saying, but there’s probably a 100% chance this incident was already on the radio.
Pure speculation, but his vantage point *might* have been the best one. There’s crowds in every direction, but in front of him was a windshield, glass, a body, seats, etc. Maybe that would have been enough to stop a bullet. Anywhere else and there’s bystanders involved.
Or maybe that’s why he didn’t pull the trigger to begin with...

I have a feeling there were more officers involved than the 2 we see, and it probably had been called in- but again that’s also armchair quarterbacking so I’m waiting till we hear all the facts before rushing to a conclusion.

And I believe they treat a vehicle as a weapon in a situation like this. So no real surprise they had guns drawn. Kinda surprised no shots fired. So there was some restraint shown by the officers.

That’s called assault with a deadly weapon and the driver is just damn lucky the other cop didn’t shoot his stupid ass through the windshield.

again, had this happened in Mexico shots would’ve been fired.
Most interactions between police officers and muggers and assaulters (like this asshole) prove to end deadly for either party. I remember that near the construction zone I work in someone tried to rob a bank and...well... these officers don’t ask questions. the guy was shot to death.
another time, a mugging was going on in Constituyentes and an off duty detective got out of his car and shot the guy to death.
I don’t think its the way to go, but man... such violent times call for violent measures. Even transit police officers and rookies here have guns which I find crazy!

Man and people cheer them on... Those kids don’t know what they’re doing, and he died trying to get money.
Living here with the fear of three people just storming my car and trying to take my shit, well... its horrible... I can almost have no empathy for them.
But seeing how quickly this guy just pulls out a gun and takes him down it sorta makes me feel bad too... the mugger died later in the hospital.

I think everyone’s pretty lucky that the other cop didn’t shoot the driver. Incapacitating a driver while he or she is accelerating is often an effective way of turning a car into a poorly-aimed multi-ton projectile.
